Often called one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, the journey from Kandy to Ella climbs through tea estates, cloud forest and tunnels. Here's how to make the most of it.
The route
The full ride from Kandy to Ella takes around seven hours. Short on time? Board at Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, for the most dramatic section: about three hours past Pattipola, the highest station on the line, and on through Haputale and Bandarawela.
Booking tips
Reserved seats sell out weeks ahead in busy season, so book as soon as your dates are set. We arrange tickets for every tour that includes the train.

On board
Bring water and snacks, keep your camera handy and take turns at the windows, always holding on safely. Vendors sell spicy vadai and hot tea along the way.
Don't miss
The famous Nine Arch Bridge lies just beyond Ella, so you won't cross it on the way in. Walk there from town and time your visit with a passing train for the classic photo.
Ride the train on our Lanka Legacy Luxe, Highland Trails or Family Adventure tours, or ask us to add it to yours.
